Top 3 Reasons Why You SHOULD Play Video Games

So the 2010 mid-term elections are done in the United States and the proposed bill to make it illegal to sell “violent” video games didn’t pass. It’s surprising how many people think video games are the scum of the Earth. A debate speech I have to present in school would be a good post to correct this weird mind set.

How many of you played a game on Facebook? Your iPhone? or your computer? We are all gamers in one way or another. If you haven’t done any of those, I encourage you to keep reading why you SHOULD play video games.

You play these games to entertain yourself for half an hour or so. You end up loosing yourself in a world where the impossible exist – in Farmville on Facebook you own a farm; birds are really pissed at pigs in Angry Birds; and you have a deck of cards that can shuffle and deal itself in solitaire. It’s for fun.

Here are the top 3 reasons you SHOULD play video games:

1. It’s bonding time

My mom, dad, brother and I would play Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 back in the day. That was the most fun I’ve had with my dad. He would button smash (purposely) and make Mario do some really unexpected manoeuvres and end up in odd places. He would act oblivious to the fact he’s stuck and make Mario so some more weird actions. My sides would hurt from laughing so hard. He did end up with 40-something stars out of 100, so he did pretty well for an old timer.

Every game console out there (excluding your hand held devices) can have up to four players at a time. Think of it as the updated family night. A game of Mario Party 8 where you’re twisting and jumping around instead of a boring board game. The Wii is especially good as more of the games are suited for family and kids.

Not only does video games allow families to grow closer, they can create everlasting friendships or even true love. Games that are played online have deep communities that have already have a deep bonding connection — the game. Friendships form out of doing quests with each other since you enjoy the company and the style of play the person brings. I’ve been with the same group of gamers since 2007.

2. Variety of games

From games on your phone to flash games on Facebook to MMOs on your computer to First-Person Shooters on a console (*gasp*) there are many different types of games to play and many platforms to play them on.

Visit and you’ll be treating with thousands of flash games that come in a variety of categories that live up to the website’s name.

Micosoft, Sony and Nintendo each have their respected marketplaces that sell small arcade games.

Visit GameSpot or IGN for reviews of new games being released that may interest you.

3. You can learn and grow from video games

The Grand Theft Auto series of games can teach navigation. Before you laugh remember the gamer has to find his/her way around this giant city to complete missions. Get down there with young Billy, cover up his mini-map and direct him to his next mission with the giant map that comes with the game. It’ll add a new aspect to the game for young Billy and for him to show you how much he knows the city (and he will).

Playing fast-action video games helps decision-making. Studies have shown that video games can “improve sensory and perceptual tasks, involving hand-to-eye co-ordination, as well as those that require a lot of attention.”

Take Lexus and they’re “pursuit to stopping accidents”, for example. A simulator is a type of a video game in my books.

Or how about Redken’s Busy Scissors where you can become a hair styliest right in your own living room.

Games are meant to be fun. The media loves to point the finger at video games when someone does something stupid. In trueth, the incident could have happened anyway. It all comes down to if the individual’s ethical compass is working. Enjoy playing video games because you can learn and grow from them.
